Life As A Trainer/Coach/ Martial Arts Instructor(the blessing)

Posted on Updated on

Just a little motivational thought today for those of us who live this hard but blessed life. Also for those thinking about getting in to it. It’s not about the money baby! I’ve been blessed to fight for a living early on but that isn’t always great financially either. I’ve done well with pr and do well training but it’s not going to make you a billionaire. It is going to bless you!

Through full contact karate pro fights, Muay Thai pro fights and later sport karate the love of it drives. The love of training, pushing and doing better. That love cascades over into teaching. Training pros is great. What is better is seeing people get better. To know your living is about helping people change their lives and become better. Imparting knowledge while imparting bruises! That is the gift and blessing we get as trainers. Whether you were a competitor or just teach, we are brothers. We are blessed to do this and have it be our life. Sometimes pushing through the aches and pains of this life, we live a life many dream of. Sweating and working out for a living. Having people look up to you. NEVER FORGET that!!! Enjoy the ride. Enjoy the lifestyle. Now go train!

Just Get Going ! (Martial Arts,Travel,Lifestyle)

It’s not that simple you say, but it really is. It isn’t simple doing it but if you don’t start the actual process you’ll never get there! Nothing worthwhile is ever easy, but that is why its worthwhile. You have to start. As I say over and over to people I train, you have to take the first step.

If you want to be a black belt, a fighting legend or just be a confident martial artist, research. See what is around you and see who you can work with and how much. Then go! If you cant afford it, really look. Change your spending habits, but also look. Lots of cheap clubs at schools, colleges etc. Not always the best, but a place to start. Soon we will have a video series available here. Just basics but cheap, and a place to start learning the basics so stay tuned.

Yearning to travel or have an adventourous lifestyle you write about? Start where you are. Seriously, look around your area and look for a story. Somebody wants to know about it. Blogs are easy to start. Heck post the story on facebook! It is a start at writing. No you wont get paid but it is a way to sharpen your skills and get your name out there. It is a place to start and that is how it works. Make where you are an adventure, and that will help get you to other places. That will get you noticed!

Whatever it is, start. Find out what, where and how. Then don’t just sit there and dream about it. Do what it takes to make it happen. Success is hard work. Enjoying it is easy. Go!

Training Gives You A Positive Mental And Physical State (find something you want to try today!)

Posted on

Life can be tough. It often is. Job, financial and relationship stress can be a killer. When that happens and you don’t have a release and a fighting/coping system that you use, things are going to go south fast. Add in health problems that crop up and the stress will make health worse!  It will make it all worse!! What do you do? Is there something that helps? Yep, at least for me and you have nothing to lose trying it. Before we go on, mine is martial arts but training at any activity helps. While I hope yours becomes martial arts ( join Team Transcend Today!!! Lol) anything you get a physical/ mental benefit from training at is good.

When you work at building skill, you also build outlets for stress. You build mental and physical strength through doing so. Besides the obvious health benefits of being in better shape, the overall health benefit is well being. Mind and body. You handle things better because you’ve put yourself through things. You handle things better because your trainer has put you through things. That gives you an advantage. It gives you a strength others do not possess!!!!!  What more can I say. It makes a huge difference in your life!  Get on it now. Change your level of success. Change your health. Change your enjoyment of life.

If you want to make the change today, find something you want to train at. An activity you’ve always wanted to do. Don’t wait. Start now. If I hadn’t, I wouldn’t be here ( story in earlier posts). Get going. If you need personal coaching/ motivation I have a great inexpensive program for that. I also now have a Team Transcend video version to help you. It’s a daily personal training and coaching system. In no way is it like being in my dojo or other good ones but it gets you started. Toward confidence. Toward health. Also inexpensive. Are You Motivated As An Instructor Or Trainer For The Right Reasons? Your Success Depends On it!

Posted on Updated on

The Title might make you think it’s about monetary success. Nope. Personal, monetary and effect on humanity. All of those are metrics and sometimes they are combined. Time to understand why you do what you do. It doesn’t matter what you are training people to do. I’ll aim what I write at martial arts/Muay Thai/mma trainers as I spent decades in that world ( still there ) but ive also trained personnel in forex trading and social media marketing. The answers and reasons are similar.

As an old po fighter I live working with the upcoming animals and pros. It is who I was and it pays  well. Wanna know a secret?  The free class I teach motivates me. These kids often don’t have much. Sometimes that night working with us is the only time anybody spent time with them that day. That’s what motivates me. Handing down knowledge. Helping them get better. Helping them be confident. It’s true throughout my classes and students. That class motivates m to do well as a trainer so I can keep teaching that group for free. It boils down to making sure I have knowledge to hand down. At each level. If my seminars didn’t help pros and solid dojo’s, it wouldn’t work. If my promo work for companies was bad???!!!  I get to travel to teach people at seminars and promote while I’m there as well. If I didn’t have something worth handing down, the chain is broken and the money doesn’t matter. The money would not come in. Get motivated. Know what motivates you, then build your program/product.

It’s the same teaching people to trade forex or teaching people about social media marketing. If you don’t have good legitimate information to teach them, you’ll crash and burn!!!!  You have to enjoy teaching and training whether it’s Muay Thai/ mma/ karate or social media marketing. If a guy pays you to teach him to trade forex, you need to actually know what you are doing. Otherwise your just another scammer headed for a bad end.

Understand why you are a trainer. Understand what motivates you. Otherwise just get out of the game. If you need help with personal coaching, seminars in your dojo or great advertising/ marketing campaigns hit us up. Inexpensive rates and engaged following plus you’ll have fun! Pick Yourself Up Off The Ring Floor and Finish ( in fighting/life/business)

Posted on

As a fighter we would talk about beating the count or riding the clock out of trouble. It happens no matter how awesome you are in the ring or cage. You’re going to be in that position. It will happen in business at some point, no matter how smart you are or how great your product is. It will happen in life no matter how hot you are or how much money you have. The way out is the same. I’m going to tell you a short, embarrassing story from my fight career to make my point.

A life time ago I was fighting in an absolute tournament, open weight in other words. It was part of a GP series heading into a national cup. Part of the long defunct LFF it was different than normal. No weight class (absolute) and a mix of styles. No ground but standard rules for sweeps. We usually had a Muay Thai or kickboxing format in these pro series fights but this brought all kinds in. From brawlers to guys who looked like WWE people.  In the semi round I came up against a Tongan guy (Manny something lol). Well over 6ft and mid 200#  I was taller then, maybe 5’9 as I’ve lost about 2 inches of my neck from damage now. I was also only about 138# then lol. I decided to get the crowd pumped right off by going back to my karate roots and throwing a flying side kick out of the box. Not a normal technique for kick boxing, and I thought it would look awesome !!!  Plus executed well to the head it might set the tone or end the fight early. Sooooo, I basically misjudged where I was and missed. Classic airball miss. As I came out of the air his giant hand clocked me right in the face and took me to the canvas. My cockiness and lack of of distance judgement had just put me flat on my back. In pain, embarrassed and likely being laughed at ( couldn’t tell you because my ears were ringing) I could have easily been done. Somehow I managed to beat the count and get to my feet. I think I spent the rest of the round running from him. The next rounds I cut angles and basically side  kicked his leg until he couldn’t go on( chopping the tree ). Again not standard Muay Thai but it’s what I had available, and it kept me away from those giant paws!!!

So what’s my point here overall? Don’t stop. Don’t give up. Yes it hurt. Yes I was embarrassed. Yes I could have still lost. You know what would have been worse?  Giving up. Laying there when I had a choice. Try!!!!!  Don’t stop trying. I don’t care if it’s an issue in your marriage, or a hiccup in your social media marketing plan. Don’t stop trying. Change your tactics. Change how you do it. Don’t give up on yourself. Don’t give up on winning. Don’t give up on success.

Drilling for Precision Under Pressure (Exhaustion)

Posted on Updated on

Besides teaching class and training fighters, I keep a personal training routine every day. It’s how at my age I can still get in the ring with these guys. Plus it keeps me active, in shape and I love it. One thing I always do(and push my fighters with in training ) is drilling precision at the end after I’m exhausted. Not that you don’t always work to be precise, but forcing yourself to think and target at that time is harder. Its a great help in the late stages of a fight.

After I’ve worked the heavy bag, pads and long live rounds of footwork this is where I go. I switch to my lighter wave master bag. First I slow down a bit but constantly striking.  If I miss the mark or my form hinks up, I add reps. The mental and physical fatigue make this hard(mental because your starving for air, more on this in another article).  That is why its important. The same thing happens in a fight. You are tired at the end. You are fatigued. This is when precise striking helps when. It always helps win, but if you can keep your head and not lose your technique, it gives you a great edge at the end.

Even if you don’t fight, try adding this to your training routine. The clarity of mind, and crispness of technique you gain will amaze you. It’s also a great add for the fitness portion. Always pushing. Always gaining. In another article I will discuss this further as well as a couple of coaching tricks I use with students and fighters that help in this area.

Staying Agile and Fit to Slow the Aging Process

Posted on Updated on

I’ve done a lot of damage to this old body. Yes having been a professional fighter did some long term damage, but there are other things as well. Football and wrestling when I was in school. A couple of nasty car wrecks. Most importantly, I had encephalitis when I was teen. As I’ve aged the damage from that has caused issues and pain. Still, doctors and friends are always amazed at the things I can do with my body and how agile I stile am. It is not a secret why and it isn’t because I’m super human, I’m very average. I train hard every day!

My daily routine of martial arts training and fitness routines has allowed me to stay active. Not only does it help me overcome my damage, it has helped slow the aging process. It allows me to push hard, run multiple projects everyday because of my energy level. I don’t want to slow down. If its working for me with all this damage, it can definitely help you slow the age wave .

The stretching and movement I have to do everyday is what makes it all work.  Pushing myself to still move quickly and kick to the head, pushes my body and mind to keep going. It’s not magic, its just work. Like I said, I’m average. Anybody can gain from this lifestyle, you just have to take the first step and start !

Pushing my cardio limit everyday to be able to still train my younger fighters in the ring helps my overall health. I come from a line of people who have heart trouble, high blood pressure and diabetes. At 47 years old, all my med workups in that respect are fantastic( my X-ray file is bad but broken bones from fighting don’t count lol). I can guarantee you that my training regimen is heavily responsible for that bit of good news for me. If it is helping me, it can help you.

While I love martial arts and think its for everyone, you can stay fit and Agile through many other routines. You just need to get started. Find something you are interested in and that will push you physically. Get going, stick with it and see the health and aging benefits for yourself. You can do this! You can live better! Get going!
