Just a little motivational thought today for those of us who live this hard but blessed life. Also for those thinking about getting in to it. It’s not about the money baby! I’ve been blessed to fight for a living early on but that isn’t always great financially either. I’ve done well with pr and do well training but it’s not going to make you a billionaire. It is going to bless you!
Through full contact karate pro fights, Muay Thai pro fights and later sport karate the love of it drives. The love of training, pushing and doing better. That love cascades over into teaching. Training pros is great. What is better is seeing people get better. To know your living is about helping people change their lives and become better. Imparting knowledge while imparting bruises! That is the gift and blessing we get as trainers. Whether you were a competitor or just teach, we are brothers. We are blessed to do this and have it be our life. Sometimes pushing through the aches and pains of this life, we live a life many dream of. Sweating and working out for a living. Having people look up to you. NEVER FORGET that!!! Enjoy the ride. Enjoy the lifestyle. Now go train!
Life can be tough. It often is. Job, financial and relationship stress can be a killer. When that happens and you don’t have a release and a fighting/coping system that you use,things are going to go south fast. Add in health problems that crop up and the stress will make health worse! It will make it all worse!! What do you do? Is there something that helps? Yep, at least for me and you have nothing to lose trying it. Before we go on, mine is martial arts but training at any activity helps. While I hope yours becomes martial arts ( join Team Transcend Today!!! Lol) anything you get a physical/ mental benefit from training at is good.
When you work at building skill, you also build outlets for stress. You build mental and physical strength through doing so. Besides the obvious health benefits of being in better shape, the overall health benefit is well being. Mind and body. You handle things better because you’ve put yourself through things. You handle things better because your trainer has put you through things. That gives you an advantage. It gives you a strength others do not possess!!!!! What more can I say. It makes a huge difference in your life! Get on it now. Change your level of success. Change your health. Change your enjoyment of life.

A Road Trip To The Chicago Suburbs To Judge Martial Arts ( with stops at IKEA,Portillos,Mago Cantina)
Sometimes my favorite trips are the simple ones to judge sport martial arts tournaments. Not big fights, not national tourneys and not big PR trips. I live all those, but sometimes just having fun in short ones with little or no pressure is the best. That was this weekend. My wife and I judged at a small but great tournament that was a fundraiser for wounded veterans up in the Chicago suburbs. Part of the way we drove two lane through the country on 47 and across old rte 66. I’ll do another piece about that area but here is a quick pick of tiny old school trailer selling coffee in a small town. Heck it might end up being its own story some Day. The trailer sits in Forest IL along 47 which is about half way between my place and the burbs. It was closed but I’ll be making a trip just for it. OK, on to the real trip. The tournament was well run ( with my help of course, jk lol) so it went quickly. That left us plenty of time to wander around. Shopping, drinks and appetizers and dinner. First a few pics from the tournament including one of me with a guy I used to fight years ago. Good friends but we had some battles lol. It was his tourney.
After we left the tournament our first stop was IKEA in Bolingbrook. We love Ikea,and have bout lots of things there especially furniture for our kids. It’s just a cool place to walk around and get design ideas.
After that we did a little shopping at The Promenade Bolingbrook. It’s a cool mall but not the enclosed kind. Open walking environment with lots of restaurants and bars with great outdoor seating. My wife insisted that we were going to Portillo’s for dinner( an addiction!) but we decided to grab drinks at Mago Grill and Cantina. Great selection of sauces with our chips and salsa. We absolutely will return here for dinner and a full review. I had a couple great beers from Two Brothers brewing ( one of my faves & always great. ). Sandy had a piña colada mojito. She loves mojitos but hadn’t had one like that. Quite good with lots of fresh lime! Again we will be back! Check some pictures from Promenade and Mago.
No matter how many times or often we are in the Chicago area ( which is often) we makes lots of trips to Portillo’s! We have for decades. Great Italian beef,burgers and dogs. Always great food and such a cool look. They all have a slightly different kitsch to them depending on size. Great prices and just a fun place. One of my absolute favorite places on the planet. Tried other stuff but I almost always get the Big beef with spicy giardinera and fries. Can’t beat it. Huge and delicious! Take a look at what the one in Bolingbrook looks like, and part of my sandwich. I was hungry and forgot to take pictures! I’m a fighter that writes a little lol.
Im blessed to go all over and see all kinds of things, but a weekend like this close to home is awesome. Martial arts,drinks and food! The best. Check these places out. And hit this area if you get a chance. Warrenville, Naperville and Bolingbrook are all close together. Great food and shopping.

I’ve done a lot of damage to this old body. Yes having been a professional fighter did some long term damage, but there are other things as well. Football and wrestling when I was in school. A couple of nasty car wrecks. Most importantly, I had encephalitis when I was teen. As I’ve aged the damage from that has caused issues and pain. Still, doctors and friends are always amazed at the things I can do with my body and how agile I stile am. It is not a secret why and it isn’t because I’m super human, I’m very average. My daily routine of martial arts training and fitness routines has allowed me to stay active. Not only does it help me overcome my damage, it has helped slow the aging process. It allows me to push hard, run multiple projects everyday because of my energy level. I don’t want to slow down. If its working for me with all this damage, it can definitely help you slow the age wave .
The stretching and movement I have to do everyday is what makes it all work. Pushing myself to still move quickly and kick to the head, pushes my body and mind to keep going. It’s not magic, its just work. Like I said, I’m average. Anybody can gain from this lifestyle, you just have to take the first step and start !
Pushing my cardio limit everyday to be able to still train my younger fighters in the ring helps my overall health. I come from a line of people who have heart trouble, high blood pressure and diabetes. At 47 years old, all my med workups in that respect are fantastic( my X-ray file is bad but broken bones from fighting don’t count lol). I can guarantee you that my training regimen is heavily responsible for that bit of good news for me. If it is helping me, it can help you.
While I love martial arts and think its for everyone, you can stay fit and Agile through many other routines. You just need to get started. Find something you are interested in and that will push you physically. Get going, stick with it and see the health and aging benefits for yourself. You can do this! You can live better! Get going!
